The Vélo Francette

A true compendium of sweet France, the Vélo Francette provides a link between the English Channel and the Atlantic Ocean.  From Ouistreham to La Rochelle, this bike trail runs 630 km along small roads, immersing you into the charm of towns and villages of the French countryside.
It follows many valleys, crosses the Loire in Angers, then follows the Thouet and the Sèvre Niortaise, joining the Marais Poitevin, and finally the Atlantic Coast.
Its Niort leg offers a succession of various viewpoints and terrains.

• From Échiré and the Coudray-Salbart Château, the Sèvre Niortaise and its mills are never far from Vélo Francette, just like Logis de Mursay, childhood home of Madame de Maintenon, future wife of Louis XIV.
• In Niort, you reach a lively downtown with its the Dungeon and Les Halles, an ideal gastronomical and cultural stopover to discover the rich historical past of this merchant city.
• Finally from Port Boinot, along the Sèvre Niortaise, it continues on a secure route towards the Marais Poitevin with its white paths to reach Magné, Coulon, la Garette and the other villages of the Green Venice until Arçais, the landscape of conches and channels, lined with rows of pollarded ash trees, ensuring freshness and tranquility.

From this secure itinerary, a set of loops allow you to discover in more detail the historic, legendary or intangible heritage of the Niortese country, between wash houses, know-how and local traditions.  Over 300 km of marked trails open to you!

Two new routes open to the east. As of 2020, two new sections are being set up:
The "from Park to Park" bike path will eventually link the Marais Poitevin to the Millevaches Regional Natural Park and Vassivière Lake.   From Niort it heads due east via Aiffres, Prahecq, then crosses Mellois and North-Charente before finishing its journey in Limousin.
From 2021-2022, further north from Échiré, a new bike path (V94) will go up the Sèvre Niortaise Valley to join Poitiers and then the Brenne Regional Natural Park.
