The urban capital of the Marais Poitevin
Administrative capital of the Deux-Sèvres, Niort is at the head of the Communauté d’Agglomération de Niort (greater Niort district) and the capital of mutual insurance companies in France. The sixty-thousand-inhabitants commune can tell you nine centuries of history.
From its historic heart bathed in the river Sèvre Niortaise, to the brand new esplanade of the Brèche, this perpetual city of business hides a varied heritage including the imposing keeps built in the XIIth century by Henry II Plantagenet, king of England. Today, this heart beats to the rythme of street arts during the many festive events which animate the city centre and its village districts. For several centuries, from the top of its hills, Niort has been dominating the astonishing landscapes of the Marais Poitevin of which it is the Eastern gateway. Niort affirms today its urban and countryside character by the conquest of the river banks and the preservation of its biological and cultural diversity.
