At the heart of a Small City of Character, the Abbey of Nieul-sur-l'Autise is an architectural jewel of exceptional quality, highlighted and managed by the Vendée Department. Founded in 1068, the abbey was granted royal abbey status in 1141 by Aliénor d'Aquitaine, then Queen of France. It presents one of the few Poitevins monastic ensembles almost intact with its three elements including the only Romanesque cloister of the West preserved in its entirety.
