Hurrah! It’s that exciting time of year again when the days are getting shorter and the evenings are getting colder. Christmas is approaching and everyone is preparing for the festive season, including the town of Niort. Where can you go for mulled wine, hot chocolate and other festive treats? We have scouted out the best things for you to see and do in the coming weeks.
Christmas Markets
This year there are not one but two traditional Christmas Markets in Niort which open on Saturday 1st December. Just over half a dozen are located in the beautiful Jardins de la Brèche with the majority on the impressive Place du Donjon – in total there are about 40 stalls. It is just the place to buy Christmas presents and to warm yourself up in the evening with a mulled wine or a hot chocolate.
Illuminations
The Christmas lights are spectacular! They are bright and colourful, glitter and shine and make our town of Niort worth a detour from miles around. This year Niort has also hung up illuminating presents to welcome visitors at the station, by the market and on the main shopping street. There are also two Christmas trees which have been tastefully decorated and will light up the town. They will be lit on Saturday 1stDecember at 17:30 and promise a spectacular evening illuminating our beautiful town.
Projection on the Donjon
The Donjon will be lit up from 1st December with a projection created by two companies in Niort which will show you how Father Christmas prepares for Christmas. It is not just your children who will enjoy watching this projection but it will appeal to everyone. The films will be shown every evening between 17:30 and 22:30.
Sledging and Ice Skating
Sledging on the Jardins de la Brèche begins on 1st December and is open on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays from 16:00 to 19:00, on Wednesdays from 14:00 to 19:00 and Saturdays and Sundays from 10:00 to 20:00 (make sure you check on www.vivre-a-niort.com for precise times). Costs start at 1.50€ for one ride, 5€ for 5 rides or 10€ for 12 rides. An ice rink will be open on the Place du Temple throughout December with prices starting at 4€ for 30 minutes.
So, as you can see, Niort has a huge amount to offer and competes with many another much bigger French city. Make the most of the wealth of opportunities and enjoy yourself!
Happy Christmas!
