Niort, city of insurance

One for all and all for one

The phylloxera crisis meant that the Deux-Sèvriens had to reconvert to the cooperative method at the end of the XIXth century. Cooperative dairies were created in the south of the area. Based on the model of the agricultural cooperative, the mutual insurance companies were born in Niort during the XXth century. This can be partly explained by the presence since the XVIth century of the Protestant church whose lifestyle is base on helping others and solidarity.
