Niort, yesterday and today

The urban capital of the Marais Poitevin

The administrative capital of the Deux-Sèvres, the town at the head of the Communauté d’Agglomération de Niort (greater Niort district), the capital of the mutual insurance companies, the commune of sixty thousand inhabitants can tell you the story of nine centuries of history.

From its historic heart bathed Sèvre Niortaise river to the brand new esplanade of the Brèche, this perpetual city of business hides a varied rich heritage of which the imposing keeps built in the XIIth century by Henry II Plantagenet, king of England. This heart beats today to the rythme of street arts during the many festive events which animate the town centre and its village districts. For several centuries, from the top of its hills, Niort has dominated the astonishing landscapes of the Marais Poitevin of which it is the Eastern gateway. Niort affirms its urban and countryside character today by the conquest of the river banks and the preservation of the biological and cultural diversity of the town.
