The keep: 1st building of Niort classified Historical Monument. At the edge of the Sèvre Niortaise, stands one of the most beautiful sets of dungeons twin novels of France. They formed the central redoubt of a vast castle in the shape of a quadrilateral, some 700 meters long and armed with a dozen towers. It is the King of England, Henry II Plantagenet, who, wanting to develop and in defense of the domains that his wife, Aliénor of Aquitaine brought him by his marriage, decided to rebuild, at the end of the 12th century. century, the castle of Niort and make it an impregnable fortress. Both dungeons are square; the south one measures 13,50 m. from the side, that of the north 15 m. x 14 m. ; they are respectively 28 m high. and 23 m. Their plan is similar: a cylindrical tower full of 5 m. diameter encompasses each corner and a hemicylindrical median stiffening consolidates the walls. The southern dungeon, erected in the 12th century, is the highest of the two (28 m.). This is a typical example of the military architecture of that time. The Niort Donjon has been awarded a star in the 2018 edition of the Michelin Green Guide. Dungeon, 1000 years of history. Permanent exhibition designed to tell and explain the history of the city and dungeon. The architectural evolution of the dungeon, from the 12th century. to the present day, is staged thanks to 3D modeling. The explanatory panels, the dioramas, a filmed projection and a general topographical model of the medieval city allow to account for this past. To discover during a free visit (free on the first Sunday of each month): the lower rooms dedicated to regional archeology (lapidary collections in the clear dungeon room, archaeological objects dating from prehistory to Roman times in the lower hall and temporary exhibition in the hall of the black dungeon) and on the floor of the central building, the furniture poitevin - reconstitution of a Poitevin interior (discovery of the daily life of a Niortais family at the end of the 19th century); place of temporary exhibitions and panoramic view of the old town from the north terrace. Sundays to museums: thematic visit on the 4th Sunday of the month. Museum Vacations: visit of the collections followed by a workshop with taste. The Nocturnes of Thursday: thematic visit in the evening during the summer season. The birthday at the dungeon. Possibility for children to celebrate their birthday in blue or red costume (dresses for girls and tunics for boys): guided tour followed by a small workshop or medieval game with afternoon tea.

"Anniversaire au Donjon" Mme Bureau Period of stay : February 2014
